Chris Freund - Managing Partner
Prior to forming Mekong Capital in 2001, Mr. Chris Freund was a Vice President and Portfolio Manager with Templeton Asset Management, Ltd., the emerging markets arm of the Franklin/Templeton Group. His involvement with Vietnam dates from mid-1994 when he was doing a research project for Harris Associates, a Chicago based fund management firm. Chris worked for Templeton in Vietnam from early 1995 until mid-1998. In mid-1998, Chris relocated to Templeton’s Singapore office, where he covered the technology sector in emerging markets. He moved back to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in April 2001 to establish Mekong Capital.
Chris holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology, with honors, from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He grew up in Chicago and attended the Latin School of Chicago.
Chris is a member of the Board of Directors of Mekong Enterprise Fund II, Ltd., and Chairman of Vietnam Azalea Fund Limited.
Chris is one of the co-founders, and a non-executive Director, of Management Consulting Group Ltd., which owns
VietnamWorks.com, Vietnam's most successful job recruitment website, and
Navigos Group, the largest executive search company in Vietnam. He is a Special Advisor to the Vietnam Association of Financial Investors (VAFI).
Chris is the founder and Managing Partner of Mekong Capital. As the Managing Partner, Chris is accountable for the sustainability and success of Mekong Capital, and that Mekong Capital fulfills on its vision for its future. Chris is also accountable that each of the team members are empowered to achieve extraordinary results, and work together as a team to fulfill our shared commitment that Mekong Capital achieves the most consistently high investment returns in Asia. Thomas F. Lanyi, CFA - Director
Dr. Thomas Lanyi has seven years of direct investment management experience, most of which he gained working in Asia. He started his career in asset management with Singapore-based Templeton Asset Management Ltd. Reporting directly to Group Executive Chairman and Emerging Markets pioneer, Dr. Mark Mobius, Thomas was solely responsible for strategic listed and unlisted investment opportunities in South East Asia, including Vietnam. As Executive Director, he also provided input at the fund level, including product development & investment strategy, communication & investor relations, and fund administration. Prior to joining Mekong Capital, Thomas worked with Hanoi-based BIDV-Vietnam Partners Investment Management as a portfolio manager, successfully investing the firm’s first fund and significantly contributing to raising its second vehicle.
Thomas earned a Doctorate in Economic Sciences and Capital Markets Theory with distinction from the Vienna University of Economics and a Masters Degree in International Management in exchange with Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Paris (Community of European Management Schools). Besides pursuing his career in the fund management industry, he is a visiting lecturer at institutes and business schools around the region teaching Finance/Applied Accounting and Investment Management. Thomas holds the CFA designation and is an active member of the Singapore Society of Financial Analysts.
As a Director, Thomas is responsible for overall management of deal sourcing; appraisal; implementation; post-investment and divesting activities. He is also responsible for empowering the Investment team members to achieve extraordinary results. Thomas is in charge of portfolio management of Vietnam Azalea Fund (“VAF”). He is a member of Mekong Capital’s internal Management Committee.

Tran Thi Thu Hong - Director
Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hong was previously a Business Development Manager of IKEA, where she was in charge of creating a sourcing network in South East Asia, building up supplier’s competence and setting up business strategy. Before that she worked for IBM Indochina as a Procurement and Distribution Specialist. Hong obtained her MBA at IMPAC University, Florida, U.S.
As a Director of Mekong Capital, Hong is responsible to create significant
values for portfolio companies of the Funds and empower the investment team in
the North to achieve their targets. Hong is also a member of Mekong Capital’s internal Management Committee. Hong is based in Hanoi.

Nguyen Ngoc Lan - Senior Advisor
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lan was a co-founder and Vice Chairman of Natural Joint Stock Company, a leading Vietnamese company specializing in the supply of natural bath products to domestic and international hospitality markets. Prior to that, he was the co-founder and Executive Director of Buss Company Limited/Jockey Vietnam, the local representative of the global under-garments company. Lan has advised several major international retail companies on setting up their retail operations in Vietnam and has extensive knowledge and experience of the retail industry in Vietnam. Lan obtained an Honors degree in Agricultural Science from Latrobe University, Australia and enrolled for further studies at the University of California on a reciprocal scholarship program with Latrobe University, U.S.
As a Special Advisor, Lan is responsible for sourcing new investment opportunities for Mekong Capital’s funds. Lan is based in HCMC.

Le Manh Dzung - Senior Associate
Mr. Le Manh Dzung worked in the banking industry for more than 10 years at management positions for both local and foreign banks based in Vietnam. In his capacity as project manager at CT Financial Partners, Dzung co-led and authored the credit risk management projects for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam and Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development – two of the largest commercial banks in Vietnam.
As a Deal Partner, Dzung has overall responsibility for the long-term success of
our fund’s specific investments including An Giang Plant Protection Joint Stock Company (AGPPS) and PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (DPM). He is also involved in appraising potential investments of Mekong Capital’s funds. Dzung is based in Hanoi.

Truong Cong Binh – Senior Associate
Mr. Truong Cong Binh had nine years experience working at Procter & Gamble Vietnam in various positions, including Regional Sales Manager, Customer Business Development Capability Manager, and Market Strategy & Planning Manager for many brands of Hair Care, Paper, and Oral Care product lines of P&G. Prior to that, Binh was a Tax Manager of Lam Dong Taxation Department.
As a Deal Partner, Binh has the responsibility to ensure the long-term success of Mekong Capital’s Funds’ investments, including AA Construction Architecture Joint Stock Company, Minh Phuc Packaging Joint Stock Company, and International Consumer Products (ICP). He is also involved in appraising potential investments of our funds. Binh is based in HCMC.

Nguyen The Vinh - Senior Associate
Mr. Nguyen The Vinh was previously Account Manager for Advanced Distribution Company, where he was responsible for developing and managing distributors for Mead-Johnson Nutritionals. Prior to that, he also worked for Beaufour Ipsen, a French leading pharmaceutical company as a sales and marketing manager, responsible for the Cambodia market. Vinh has a MBA degree from RMIT University.

Ngo Thi Ngoc Anh - Senior Associate
Ms. Ngo Thi Ngoc Anh was previously a management trainee with British American Tobacco Vietnam where she rotated through various functions in the Marketing department. Before that, she worked as a financial analyst and project assistant with IDG Ventures, assisting the project manager in investigating the Vietnam security market to evaluate investment opportunities.
As a Deal Partner, Ngoc Anh has overall responsibility for the long-term success of MK Smart Joint Stock Company. She is also involved in appraising potential investments of Mekong Capital’s funds. Ngoc Anh is based in Hanoi.

Mai Hoang Phuong - Senior Associate
Mr. Mai Hoang Phuong was previously a Category Manager at Tetra Pak Vietnam, where he was in charge of category strategies and customer consultant service on business planning. Before that, he was Head of Advertising & Promotion at S-Telecom, the first Vietnamese CDMA telephony provider, responsible for brand strategies, market research and media planning management. Phuong received the Best Prize awarded by the Institute of Applied Marketing.
Phuong’s responsibility as a Deal Partner is to ensure the long-term success of MEF II’s investments, including Mobile World Joint Stock Company and Mai Son Joint Stock Company. He is also involved in appraising potential investments of Mekong Capital’s funds. Phuong is based in HCMC.

Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy - Senior Associate
Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy was previously a Sales Manager for Vertu, a luxury mobile phone brand, with FPT Distribution Company, where she was in charge of the Hanoi market.
As a Deal Partner, Dieu Thuy’s overall responsibility is the long-term success of MEF’s investment in Goldsun Joint Stock Company. She is also involved in appraising potential companies of Mekong Capital’s funds. Dieu Thuy is based in Hanoi.

Le Huong Giang, ACA - Senior Associate
Ms. Le Huong Giang was previously a Product Control Manager at Morgan Stanley in England. Her team was responsible for the accurate reporting of daily P&L for several key trading desks in London as well as initiating and executing various system improvement projects, where they won the “Morgan Stanley Award of Excellence” prize. Prior to that, she worked in the Audit department of KPMG in London. Le Huong Giang has a BA degree in Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences and
is a member of the Institution of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ACA).

Pham Vu Thanh Giang - Senior Associate
Ms. Pham Vu Thanh Giang was previously an Account Executive at Aon Vietnam Ltd., a non-life insurance broker, and also a part of the Risk Management Accounts team. Thanh Giang earned the Executive Master of Finance and Banking at University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.
As a Deal Partner,
Thanh Giang is responsible for long-term success of Digiworld Corporation. She is also responsible for assisting other senior investment professionals in researching, analyzing, and appraising investment opportunities of Mekong Capital’s funds. Thanh Giang is based in HCMC.

Le Tuan – Senior Associate
Mr. Le Tuan previously worked for Macquarie Group in its New York office as an Investment Banking Analyst, where he was involved in a number of M&A and capital raising transactions. Tuan worked mainly with companies in the infrastructure services industry. He was also part of the team tasked with managing Macquarie’s private equity investments in the U.S. Tuan graduated summa cum laude from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, U.S. with a bachelor degree in Economics.
Tuan is responsible for performing analytical, financial and operational activities of Mekong Capital’s funds, including macro-economic analysis, sector research and certain company-specific research to assist with appraisals and pipeline development. Tuan is based in Hanoi.

Truong Ngoc Phung - Chief Empowerment Officer
Ms. Truong Ngoc Phung previously worked as an Investor Relations Assistant of Mekong Capital where she successfully supported tasks related to fund administration and fund reporting.
Phung is responsible for empowering the Managing Partner to successfully lead Mekong Capital to continuously achieve extraordinary results and assisting the Managing Partner in all functions. Phung is based in HCMC.

Nguyen Thi Bich Thao - Associate
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Thao was previously a Tax Assistant at KPMG Vietnam, where she worked with clients to assist them in achieving effective tax compliance and managing tax risks. Thao earned her Master of International Economics and Finance at University of Queensland, Australia.
Thao is responsible for assisting other senior investment professionals in researching, analyzing, appraising investments opportunities of Mekong Capital’s funds. She is also involved in post-investment value-added work and fund research. Thao is based in HCMC.

Le Ngoc Duy Thang – Associate
Mr. Le Ngoc Duy Thang was previously a Management Associate at AIG General Insurance (Vietnam) Company Limited, the non-life subsidiary of American International Group, Inc. (AIG). Joining AIG Vietnam during its start-up phase, he built up and managed all aspects of the overseas student insurance portfolio (AIG Student Assist) and assumed marketing, business development and corporate affairs responsibilities to help commercialize innovative local partnerships and advance AIG’s brand profile. Thang earned BA degree in Economics and Government and a Certificate in International Relations at Wesleyan University, Connecticut, U.S.

Le Hoang Tung – Associate
Mr. Le Hoang Tung was previously an analyst at RBS Global Banking & Market, London, where he specialized in M&A across the European region. Prior to that, he was an analyst specialized in Telecom Corporate Finance at ABN Amro Investment Bank. Tung graduated from University of Dundee in Scotland receiving a Bachelor degree with Honors in Applied Computing with extra studies in Economics and Spanish.

Nguyen Thi Hong Trang – Associate
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Trang previously worked for Grant Thornton Vietnam as a Corporate Finance Assistant where she was responsible for analyzing market/industry and supporting a number of business valuation and fundraising projects. Hong Trang was in charge of “Doing Business in Vietnam 2009” Guide which addressed the most common questions raised by investors when they consider investing in Vietnam. Hong Trang graduated University of Nottingham where she received a BA Honors degree in International Business and Management.

Nguyen Phuoc Huong Thao – Special Assistant to Director
Ms. Nguyen Phuoc Huong Thao was previously an Executive Assistant to the CEO of Saigon Premier Container Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City, where she assisted her superior in all major functions. Thao earned her Diploma of Business Administration at ABE UK in Singapore.

Do Thi Khanh Van – Senior Finance Consultant
Ms. Do Thi Khanh Van was previously a manager of the Research Department of FPT Securities, where she was in charge of appraising investment opportunities in companies specialized in Electricity, Oil & Gas, Real Estate and Garment industries. Prior to joining FPT Securities, she was an Auditor at Ernst & Young Vietnam for more than four years. She received a Certified Public Accountant certificate from the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance in 2007 and is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) of the UK since 2009.

Nguyen Khanh Van – Finance Consultant
Ms. Nguyen Khanh Van previously worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers Vietnam for three years as Senior Associate in Audit department and subsequently a Senior Consultant in Advisory department. She was involved in a number of audit engagements regarding manufacturing, service and banking industries. She also performed some financial due diligences and valuation projects for manufacturing clients. Ms. Van won the scholarship for the Master Business Administration concentrating on Finance and Accounting at University of Houston-Clear Lake, Texas, U.S. She became the member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) of the UK since 2009.
